The Bob Marshall Wilderness - September 2006
|
August 15, 2006 - Three friends and I went hiking and camping in the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana. We
flew from Atlanta to Great Falls, rented a car and drove a couple of hours to, and through, the town of Augusta
(don't blink) -- "the little town that's where the prairie meets the wilderness" -- turned right onto a dirt road and
went 50 miles into the wilderness.
The Bob Marshall Wilderness. At a million acres, it's the largest wilderness area in the continental United States.
The group included my college roommate Richard Gann, his
daughter (and my goddaughter) Rebecca, and Bob Hill.
We stayed the night at Ford
Creek Ranch about twenty miles
from Augusta. The next morning
we drove fifteen miles to the
Benchmark Trailhead.
There was a corral there with
our mules and horses.
We saddled up.
Mike was out trail guide. He is
also the chef at the ranch, and
he was good at both jobs.
Pack mules took our backpacks. Since they could be a little
heavier than if we actually carried them on our backs we took
in some fresh vegetables and a few bottles of wine.
The ride in, about 15 miles, in took eight hours. We were sore.
